HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –

Local independent filmmakers are showcasing their works at the Ohina Short Film Showcase.  These are short films that are either made here, tell a story about here or made by residents of Hawaii.  Joining us are two of the filmmakers being featured at the event.  Writer-Director Alana Bombino of “B Movie” and Writer-Director Alexander Bocchieri of “The Surrender Call”.

Alana spoke about “B-Movie”, a short film about two kids who get put together on a class project; it’s a smart girl and the class clown; filmed in Hilo…Alana is also from Hilo.

Alex spoke about “The Surrender Call”, a short film about the Invasion of Okinawa near the end of World War II and the conflict of ideology and personalities in trying to get the Okinawan people to come out of hiding in the countryside of the Japanese Island; filmed on O’ahu’s North Shore.

For more than a decade and a half, nearly a thousand acclaimed filmmakers, producers, directors and guests have come together to enjoy and celebrate short films created by students, amateurs and professionals alike. This year, the historic Hawaii Theatre is proud to play host to the gathering.

The ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase pays tribute to films that were made in Hawaii, tell a story about Hawaii, or were made by resident(s) of Hawaii.  Each of the films selected to be included in the 2016 ‘Ohina Short Film Showcase were screened by an all-volunteer, independent board of industry-related professionals for this distinct honor. For 2016, ‘Ohina enlisted the talents of Marvel Studios Executive Producer Nate Moore to participate in the judging.

As Hawai’i’s biggest film festival solely dedicated to locally focused short films, ‘Ohina is all about gathering and showcasing some of the best short films that Hawaii has to offer.   Be the first to see Hawaii’s newly emerging creative talent – don’t miss this special opportunity.

UPDATE FAQ – What about Fifth Friday Transport & Fifth Friday?

UPDATED as of April 25, 2016 – Info on Transportation and Hulopo‘e Beach

Pulama Lāna‘i closed its transportation service effective March 31, 2016. Which means there is now just one company providing transportation for non-Four Seasons guests, Rabaca’s Limousine Service.  This reduction may result in longer wait times for the Fifth Friday Shuttles and Transfers.

Rabaca’s Limousine Service operates a van pick up service from the Harbor to town and will also perform pick ups on an on call basis.  Your package includes one voucher per person for transfer to Lāna‘i City and one voucher per person for transfer back to the Manele Small Boat Harbor. The per person a la carte cost of a one way transfer on Rabaca is $10 cash. One option if you want to visit the beach is to walk from the Harbor and then call Rabaca’s for pick up and utilize a voucher for the transfer to town.

Hulopo‘e Beach is a short walk (4/10ths of a mile) from the Manele Small Boat Harbor. There are public restroom facilities and freshwater showers available at the beach park. The Four Seasons Manele Hotel, now known as Four Seasons Resort Lāna‘i, is OPEN and is the nearest food option to the beach.  Followed by Views located on the Manele Golf Course, which is an uphill walk of about 7/10ths of a mile from the Manele Harbor. The other options for food are located 7 miles away in Lāna‘i City.
